The Best Back to Back, Canted Plan

The 13-year-old sorrel gelding Canted Plan, otherwise known as Scooter, owned Purina Ambassador Tyler Pearson and Kyle Irwin is the 2018 AQHA Steer Wrestling Horse of the Year. This is the second time for Scooter to win this prestigious title!  Not to mention, Tyler and Scooter were the 2017 PRCA Steer Wrestling World Champions! Scooter will be carrying four contestants at the 2018 NFR: Tyler Pearson, Kyle Irwin, Tyler Waguespack, and Ty Erickson. We are proud to have Scooter and Tyler on our team and look forward to watching them compete at the 2018 WNFR in Las Vegas!

Purina: What does it mean to have your horse voted as horse of the year by your peers?

Tyler: It means a whole lot because Scooter has helped a lot of guys this year no only our crew (Pearson, Kyle Irwin, Tyler Waguespack, and Ty Erickson) so to have him voted Horse of the Year is pretty special.

How long have you rode and competed on this horse?

For two years, we [referring to co-owner, professional steer wrestler, Kyle Irwin] bought Scooter in 2016, got him legged up and competed on him at the ERA rodeos that year. Come 2017 we both made the NFR on him and after Cadillac (Clayton Hass’s horse) got hurt we picked up Ty Erickson and Tyler Waguespack.

What’s Scooter’s feed program?

Scooter gets fed Omolene 500 and Equine Senior, supplemented with Outlast Gastric Care while we are traveling.

What differences have you noticed (results) since feeding?

I’ve noticed a big difference. When we bought Scooter he was kind of a pot-bellied and a little out of shape and it’s been really fun to see him transform into the athlete he is today, and I credit a lot of that to Purina.

The 2018 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo begins December 6 and ends December 15. We wish Tyler and Scooter the best of luck competing in the steer wrestling event.

The “Colonel’s” Three-Peat

Purina Performance Horse News took some time to catch up with Jake Long and visit about 2018 AQHA Heel Horse of the Year, a 2004 Sorrel Gelding named Zans Colonel Shine. This is the third year in a row “Colonel” has earned the prestigious horse of the year title, a feat of its own. Jake and Colonel will be making the trip to the WNFR in Las Vegas, NV and we are lucky to be considered a part of their team.

Jake Long and Colonel competing at the 2017 WNFR with partner & fellow ambassador Luke Brown.

Q&A

P: What does it mean to have Colonel be voted as “Horse of the Year” by your peers?

J: I’ve been using the same response for everyone because really, there’s no other way to describe it. Honestly, it’s a huge honor to have everybody view my horse as the best one going with so many other great horses on the road. I’m very gracious and trying to stay humble, it truly means a lot that others think so highly of my horse.

P: How long have you rode and competed on Colonel?

J: I got Colonel from Dixon Flowers Rope Horses back in 2010 and he has been my main horse since 2012.

Jake Long and Luke Brown in the victory lap after the round win at the 2017 WNFR

P: What are some of the differences or results you have noticed feeding Purina throughout the year?

J: I feel like when I feed Purina my horses both look better and feel better. I don’t have to be worried about colic issues because I can really trust the research Purina puts into their products. I personally don’t blanket my horses and the energy and nutrients in their feed keeps them looking good.

P: Can you give us a break-down of Colonel’s daily feed program?

J: I have fed Strategy Health Edge for several years now. My horses get a scoop of healthy edge and a flake of alfalfa twice a day, morning and night. On the road, I will feed more alfalfa. I also feed Simple Equine supplements with Purina and I believe this is a good combination to keep joints moving good and keeping everything rolling.

P: What is Colonel’s favorite Purina treat?

J: Colonel’s favorite treat is the Apple & Oats flavor that comes in the green bag.

We wish Jake & Colonel the best of luck heading into the 2018 WNFR! #FeedGreatness

Leading Lady, DM Sissy Hayday

If you  haven’t heard of Hailey Kinsel and DM Sissy Hayday aka “Sister” by now,  you might be living under a rock far away from barrel racing or rodeo civilization, this team has lit the world on fire! The dynamic duo is leading the WPRA standings in the barrel racing leading up to the National Finals Rodeo and Sister was the recipient of the 2018 AQHA Barrel Horse of the Year. We caught up with Hailey to get the scoop on Sister!

Q & A

P: How long have you been riding and competing on Sister?

H: Almost 3 years!

What is the break-down of Sister’s feed program:

  • Free-choice coastal hay

Twice a day:

What differences (results) have you noticed since feeding Purina?

I have fed Purina for nearly 8 years now consistently. When I started feeding Purina in high school, I noticed a big difference in my horses at the times coat condition, overall body condition, performance and consistency. Sister has been on it her entire life and hasn’t really had any issues and I attribute a lot of that to Purina.

What does it mean to have Sister voted as horse of the year by your peers?

It is truly special considering we all think highly of our own horse(s), and to each of us they are our own horse of the year, so it means a lot that other girls also thought so highly of my horse. The top 25 is a perfect group to vote on it because they are going down the road all year and see all the wins and losses, so this is a big honor!

What’s Sister’s favorite treat?

Sister loves the Purina Apple & Oat flavored treats!

We want to wish Hailey and Sister the best of luck competing at the 2nd consecutive NFR! #FeedGreatness

Madison Park to Retire after Monumental Career

Kyle Carter is retiring Madison Park, “Parker”, from three and four-star level competitions after monumental career

“He was all there, all the time,” said Kyle Carter about his eventing partner, Madison Park.

Kyle and his wife Jennifer of Carter Eventing announced the retirement of one of their superstars, Madison Park (“Parker”), from three and four-star level competitions. While Kyle would love to take him to another Rolex or Badminton, he knows Parker would be better off spending the next few years doing lower level competitions.

“He’ll be so much happier to still be in the mix than he would be to do one more last hurrah.”

The couple bought Parker as a failing event horse when he was seven years old. “He wasn’t a bad horse, there was just too much of him personality wise,” said Kyle. However, the duo clicked really well at their first competition together and finished in the top three.

“He had to be allowed to behave in a manner that expressed himself…then he was happy to come along and do his work.”

Parker’s first four-star event was Rolex at 10 years old. That same year, he qualified for the Olympic team at Hong Kong. From there, the duo took the world stage by storm with a top five finish at the Pan Am games in 2007, a trip to the 2008 Olympic Games, a run at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Lexington, and nine appearances at Concours Complet International (CCI) four-star events, the last being his start at Rolex in 2016.

Kyle admits that Parker’s toughest day in eventing was always dressage, but Parker made up for it on cross country day. “There wasn’t a single day in his whole competition career with me that he did not show up on cross country day to jump in and do his job.”

“He was an example to everybody for work ethic because you could never have told if he didn’t feel right.” Knowing a horse at Parker’s age will begin to struggle more physically, this worried Kyle.

There’s a part of me that wants to keep him going,” Kyle said.

However, he has selflessly placed Madison Park’s needs above his own competition goals. Kyle retired Parker from four and three-stars to give his horse the quality of life he deserves.

Earlier in his career, the Carters had Parker on Purina Strategy. As his needs changed and performance level increased, Parker was switched to Purina Ultium, which carried him through his run in the 2008 Olympic Games. Upon the recommendation of a Purina nutritionist, the Carters switched him to Purina Senior Active due to his age and physical needs. Kyle said that Senior Active reduced inflammation and helped him run at Rolex in 2016.

Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi and her four-month-old daughter are tearing up the rodeo trail

By: Hannah Kirkpatrick

Brittany Pozzi-4_adjlogo.jpg

Tinlee Pozzi Tonozzi was born on March 21 to Garrett and Brittany Tonozzi. Then just nine days later, she went to her first rodeo. Tinlee’s Two Time World Champion mother was ready to get back on the road to the NFR.

Brittany made the decision to induce labor a week early so that she could make it to the RNCFR in Kissimmee, FL. Brittany’s doctor was happy to oblige her. It is not uncommon for doctors to induce labor before going out of town themselves.

“I got tired of sitting on the couch and watching everybody fly by me in the standings,” Brittany said.

Making a run post-baby was easier said than done, however. Brittany’s competitive spirit ambitiously thought getting back on a horse would be like riding a bike, but her body didn’t think the same.

“I had this perception in my mind that I was just going to jump on and everything would be good, well my body told me a lot different,” Brittany said.

Initially, it was all about finding balance and timing again with her horses’ varying riding styles while dealing with perpetually sore abs, not to mention figuring out how to handle five horses, two events, and an infant between her and her husband, Garrett. The Pozzi Tonozzi trailer doesn’t just haul horses, it’s a complete nursery on wheels now. Crib and all.

Between the all-night drives and diaper changes, there is little time to worry about the little things that might have happened in the last run or what might happen in the next.

“It’s almost like, I hate to say it, having another horse. Just load them up and let’s go,” Brittany laughed.

While Brittany and Garret have been on the road adjusting not only to normal life but to rodeo life with an infant, Brittany has made a strong return to the rodeo scene. In the last month alone she has won close to $22,000, was the high money winner over the 4th of July, and moved up in the world standings.

Brittany contributes her horses’ strong return partially to the four-month break she took prior to having Tinlee. She said the time off allowed her horses to enjoy some much-needed rest.

Besides some good old R&R, Brittany feels that feeding Purina keeps her horses winning and healthy.

“Even if I wasn’t sponsored by Purina, I have always fed Purina products and I always will. I feel like they go above and beyond with their science and their research,” Brittany said, “In my mind, they are the only choice to feed.”

Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi feeds her horses Manzanola Alfalfa Cubes, Purina Strategy Healthy Edge, and has recently incorporated Purina’s newest feed Ultium Gastric Care. She has her own line of Oxy-Gen products, Pozzi Relax she incorporates as a pre-race paste/pellet.

The Retirement of a Legacy: Flexible

An Internationally Successful Show Jumper’s Inspiring Journey through Recoveries and Success.

A good horse gets the job done; a great horse breaks down barriers.

Flexible, Rich Fellers’ Irish sport horse, retired at the beginning of May at the Del Mar National. Although physically small when compared to his competition, Flexible had a very big presence in the sport of show jumping.

Throughout his career spanning over two decades, Flexible faced medical challenges that would leave most horses without hope for competing again. Among the worst was a severely damaged left scapula and blocked vein in his right front leg, both rare injuries. Despite Flexible’s countless injuries, he never quit wanting to compete.

“He will do anything possible to succeed,” Fellers said.

No matter where they were in the world, anytime the duo entered the ring, crowds would roar with excitement.  These cheers came with several triumphs as Flexible and Rich earned titles that most could only dream of.

These include:

  • Winners of the 2012 World Cup Finals for Show Jumping – the first American pair in 25 years to take the title.
  • Highest placing American pair in the team and individual events in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.
  • 2nd in 2008 World Cup Finals.
  • Members of winning Nations Cup teams in 2008 and 2010.
  • Flexible earned the United States Equestrian Foundation (USEF) International Horse of the Year Award.

Rich attributed Flexible’s endurance at the age of 21 to his feeding program. When he was competing, Flexible’s daily diet consisted of Ultium, Equine Sr. Active, and Super Sport, along with forage.

“His feeding program has kept him very durable and steady. Super Sport extended his career three and a half years ago,” said Fellers

At one point, Flexible wasn’t able to go more than once a week at shows, but a month after feeding Super Sport, Rich took him out.

“He was just unbelievable.”

The amino acid supplement helped him through the qualifier rounds and the pair went on to win the Grand Prix.

Through overcoming his size and numerous injuries throughout his career, Flexible competed with a heart so big that nothing could stop him. Prior to his retirement, Rich noticed Flexible was showing signs of soundness issues.

“If he doesn’t come out of this injury, then he will retire.” With endless love for his incredible horse, Rich thought it best to retire him before further injury occurred, compromising Flexible’s well-deserved, happy retirement.

Harrie and Molly Chapman have owned Flexible the length of his competitive career, but he now is permanently retired at the Rich Feller’s Stables. His legacy will live on not only through his accomplishments but through his progeny that are having success in their own right.

One could imagine how hard it would be to compete without a counterpart like Flexible; Rich is confident in his career continuation and future in show jumping with three impressive young mares in his stables in Oregon City, OR. We are proud to have been a part of Flexible’s journey and look forward to following the future of Rich and his great stable.
